Mattresses
-
Mattresses are our first recommendation - alongside bedding and pillows - when it comes to transitioning a home to Non-Toxic decor. As they should be - this is the article on which you will spend a third of your life, more or less. And it’s no coincidence that the Organic/Non-Toxic mattress category has seen explosive growth over the last decade. As this is the largest category we’ve reviewed by far, in terms of potential inclusions (and a fair amount of cleanwashing) - the below list is our starting point, to which we’ll be adding as we review in detail additional companies. If a company is not listed yet, it doesn’t mean that they won’t make the cut (though it might!), it may be that we haven’t had the chance to review them yet.
For Non-Toxic mattresses, what we’re looking to avoid are all the potential inputs and toxic chemicals that are contained in conventional mattresses. Most conventional mattresses are made almost entirely out of petrochemical products - polyurethane foam, and polyester textiles. See our materials section for further details - in a nutshell, polyurethane foam will commonly contain flame retardants, formaldehyde, VOCs, PFAS, phthalates, heavy metals and other endocrine disrupting, reprotoxic and carcinogenic compounds. Polyester can contain an equivalent number of problematic compounds, in addition to shedding microplastics. We do not recommend mattresses made with these materials. Glues are commonly used in mattress construction, and will often be solvent based or contain formaldehyde, and can offgas high levels of VOCs.
Rather, with Non-Toxic mattresses what we’re looking for is generally speaking natural materials that are cleanly processed. In place of polyurethane foam, this will be 100% natural rubber latex that is cleanly processed. Of the two processing methods, Dunlop latex requires less additives and is considered a cleaner end result - GOLS certification helps to ensure that only the cleanest inputs are used. Talalay latex does require a higher additive load during processing, and the final latex often contains a percentage of synthetic styrene-butadiene rubber - we restrict our Talalay recommendations to 100% natural rubber that is ideally C2C Gold certified. Non-Toxic textiles in mattresses are most often Cotton and Wool - typically, we look for advanced certifications like GOTS.
Two nuances - many (most) mattresses use springs in their construction. If there is a personal EMF radiation sensitivity to navigate, we recommend a springless (latex) mattress, as the high amount of metal in hybrid or innerspring mattresses can amplify EMF radiation. Separately, for certain bodies, there is a possibility of sensitivity to the protein in latex and/or wool. In these very specific situations, it may be that a full innerspring or polyurethane-based mattress is the better choice. We would first recommend getting a sample of the suspect material, if possible (certain companies will provide this) - and if polyurethane is a necessity, we would recommend ecoINSTITUT certified PU foam as the best option, or to a lesser extent CertiPUR (which we don’t love for many reasons, but will admit is better than conventional PU foam).
Prioritize Organic Mattresses made with GOLS certified Dunlop Latex or C2C Gold Talalay Latex. Legally speaking, for a company to label a mattress Organic, it must be fully GOTS certified - which means including GOTS certified Cotton and Wool (when used), and limits potential inorganic material to <5% total construction by weight. Claims can be checked against the GOTS company registry.
Avoid Conventional Mattresses made with synthetic/petrochemical materials and containing high chemical loads. This includes CertiPUR polyurethane foam (see our certification section). Good to be somewhat wary of Organic claims that are not substantiated - this can be cleanwashing. Equally, see our certification section on Greenguard Gold - we have somewhat conflicting thoughts when it comes to how Greenguard is used as marketing within the mattress category.
Lifekind
The Original Organic Mattress Company. Lifekind's inception came with the owner developing chemical sensitivities, and not finding any chemical-free mattresses available, he decided to make them himself. Still independently owned and operated, based in Colorado, Lifekind was the first mattress company to use GOLS and GOTS certified latex and textiles, and the first to achieve full GOTS certification for their mattresses. Their catalogue includes multiple full latex options, a hybrid spring + latex, and a latex-free innerspring. As this is an innerspring and not pocketed spring system, no wrapping fabric is needed and no glues are used - and this is a fantastic option for those that are sensitive to latex (if there are no EMF concerns). In general, no petrochemical-based or synthetic materials are used in any Lifekind mattresses, nor are flame retardants or fiberglass "fire-socks". Lifekind offers full material transparency, all of which are third-party certified and audited, and their mattresses come with a 20-year warranty - which they can actually back, as they've been in business since '97! On the pricier side, but Lifekind and their sister company OMI make some of the best Organic mattresses in the world; an investment piece that will last, and become more affordable as more time passes.

Savvy Rest
Savvy Rest offers a handful of mattress options, with varying degrees of customization possible in terms of firmness and overall feel. Firmness choices will determine whether the interior layers are made of GOLS certified Dunlop latex or C2C Gold Talalay latex, and all will be wrapped in GOTS certified wool & cotton. In addition to the primary Serenity & Tranquility options, both full latex in different thicknesses, and both fully GOTS certified, Savvy offers a more affordable low-profile option - the Simplicity, which uses natural Dunlop latex (not GOLS certified, but processed cleanly and without chemical inputs) - and one pocketed spring + latex hybrid, the SerenitySpring. The pocketed coils are wrapped in polypropylene, though this material amount is below the 5% threshold for GOTS certification, and their mattresses maintain full GOTS certification.

PlushBeds
PlushBeds has some great Non-Toxic options across bedding categories, alongside more conventional/synthetic options - which according to the company is in response to consumer request and the realities of market forces - as while the Organic mattress category is growing, it's still a marginal percentage of the overall category. Important to note what materials and ingredients are used for the specific items, with this in mind. For mattresses, PlushBeds offers 4 great Non-Toxic options: Organic Bliss and Botanical Bliss are both springless mattresses, comprised of GOLS certified Latex, GOTS certified Cotton and Wool, with the Organic Bliss being a higher price point and containing some additional silk, cashmere and linen. The Botanical Bliss lists natural latex alongside GOLS latex - both are GOLS certified Dunlop latex, which is the only latex PlushBeds uses. The other two Non-Tox options are hybrids, spring + latex. Luxury Bliss is Botanical Bliss with springs, and Signature Bliss is Organic Bliss with springs. The springs are pocketed with GOTS certified cotton - not polypropylene - a rarity even in the world of Organic Mattresses, which we love. PlushBeds also uses no glues in their construction, and all 4 of our recommended mattresses are fully GOTS certified, and carry additional GOLS and Greenguard Gold certifications, with the Botanical and Luxury Bliss being ecoINSTITUT certified as well. Of the more conventional options, the somewhat confusingly named Eco Bliss is made with CertiPUR Polyurethane Foam - which we recommend avoiding, as polyurethane foam carries a high chemical load and we would not consider it to be Non-Toxic. To the point of certifications being potentially misleading - the Eco Bliss carries both CertiPUR and Greenguard Gold certifications, which can provide a false sense of safety and security in this context. For more info, see notes in our certifications section.
Earthfoam
Earthfoam makes two straightforward organic mattress options - a full latex version, using 8" of GOLS certified Dunlop latex, and a hybrid spring + latex mattress. Both contain layers of GOTS certified wool & cotton, and the latex in particular is one of the more affordable (true) organic mattresses. As a general note - full latex mattresses will often be more affordable options than hybrid or spring mattresses. Earthfoam doesn't use any glue with their pocketed springs, though they are wrapped in polypropylene (which for pocketed springs is consistently the approach even within organic mattresses). Overall the layers are held together with liquid latex rather than glues, further reducing potential chemical load. Both the latex and spring mattresses are fully GOTS certified (which is possible in the spring because the polypropylene is <5% by weight, within the 95% organic materials requirement for GOTS). Both great options!
Avocado
One of the more recognizable names in Organic Mattresses, Avocado offers a plethora of options. Within these, here are our recommendations: Avocado Green Mattress, Eco Organic Mattress, and Avocado Latex Mattress. Both the Avocado Green and Eco Organic are hybrid mattresses, comprised of springs, GOLS certified Dunlop latex, and GOTS certified cotton and wool. The Green has a slightly higher spring count, and correspondingly higher price point. While the pocketed springs are wrapped in polypropylene, no glues or adhesives are used, but a metal latching mechanism instead. Both are fully GOTS certified in their final form. If EMF radiation is a concern, we would recommend the Latex Mattress, which is comprised of multiple layers of latex and is springless. This mattress does feature both GOLS Dunlop latex and Talalay latex, though this is 100% natural rubber and does not contain any SBR and is eco-INSTITUT certified -which makes it a great all-latex option.

Happsy
Happsy is a newer imprint of Naturepedic, and makes some great straightforward Non-Toxic bedding options. Their Happsy Organic Mattress is a hybrid mattress that is fully GOTS certified, made with GOTS certified cotton and wool and GOLS certified latex. The coils are wrapped in GOTS approved polypropylene, though no glues are used in construction. To our knowledge, this is the first (only?) Organic mattress in a box - carving out their own niche with the combined approaches of a Non-Toxic approach to methods and materials, with the recently in-vogue mattress in a box phenom. We've had one that has lasted well for years. Happsy is priced on the more affordable end within Organic mattresses.
